We had our startup meeting on Thursday night at the Uralla Bowling Club and were very happy with the end result.
We had 32 people attend and after discussion about membership levels we agreed on the proposed membership tiered system with one change, in that Full Members are holders of an ABN who are currently trading and registered place of business is in the Uralla Shire, OR THEIR REPRESENTATIVE.
We then talked about the suggestion of forming a steering committee which will take the NSW Business Chamber Model Constitution, adapt it to suit us here in Uralla Shire, agree upon and adopt this Constitution, then submit it with our application to incorporate to the NSW Dept of Fair Trading.
Then it was time for positions to be filled for the Steering Committee.
I, Teresa French, of Thunder Graphics and Defence Models and Graphics in Uralla was nominated for the position of President, and there being no further nominations, was given the job, which I accepted.
Then Sonia Repin of Highland Living and Love Bomb Designs in Uralla was nominated for position of Vice President, which she declined as she was putting her hand up for secretary, so then Macka (Iain Mackintosh) of IMACKA Property in Uralla was then nominated for the position, which he accepted and then as there were no further nominations, was given that position.
Sonia was then nominated for secretary, she accepted and no further nominations so she was given the role.
Fran Welbourn of Michael’s Café in Uralla was then nominated for treasurer, which she accepted, no further nominations were made so Fran got the job.
Then we elected committee members – these were:

A discussion was had about having a larger committee than originally expected (we were thinking initially to have eight) and the consensus was that it would be a good thing due the level of difficulty in having a quorum if there were only eight on the committee. So all those who nominated themselves listed above were nominated onto the committee.
A question was raised whether it would dilute our ability to lobby council if we had a group of councillors on our committee who would have to leave the room if there was a conflict of interest – the concern was that our message would not be heard strongly enough. This caused a fair amount of discussion about conflict of interest/ vested interests, and did not really get resolved in the meeting however it is something we shall put to our local Regional Manager of the NSW Business Chamber after looking through the Model Constitution to see how they address this.
We then discussed communication and I will publish a facebook page (Uralla Shire Business Chamber) in the next few days, and the temporary website, urallashirebusinesschamber.com is already available, with chamber(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)urallashirebusinesschamber.com being the contact point for the secretary, Sonia Repin.
We then decided to meet again, with the consensus being that we would meet on the 1st Thursday of the month at 6pm, venue to be advised at this point. The steering committee will meet on the 27th of April at 5pm at the Bowling Club.
The meeting was then closed around 7.20pm.
